শিশুদের শারীরিক ও মানসিক বিকাশ একটি পরিবর্তনশীল প্রক্রিয়া যা গর্ভকালীন সময় থেকেই শুরু হয়ে যায়। জন্মের পর থেকে শিশুদের বিভিন্ন অভ্যাস তৈরী হয় যা অনেক ক্ষেত্রে বহু বছর পর্যন্ত থেকে যায়। এ সকল অভ্যাস বহুদিন রয়ে যাওয়ার কারনে এর কিছু ক্ষতিকর প্রভাব সৃষ্টি করে। শিশুদের আঙুল চোষা, অনবরত মুখে আঙুল দিয়ে রাখা, আঙুল মুখে দিয়ে ঘুমিয়ে পরা একটি অন্যতম বদঅভ্যাস যার কারনে মুখ, দাঁত ও শরীরে অনেক ক্ষতিকর প্রভাব পরিলক্ষিত হয়।

• উপরের পাটির সামনের দাঁত উচু হয়ে যাওয়া।
• নিচের পাটির সামনের দাঁত ভেতরের দিকে চলে যাওয়া।
• দাঁত আঁকাবাঁকা হয়ে ওঠা।
• তালু গভীর হয়ে সরু হয়ে যাওয়া।
• উপরের মাড়ি সরু হয়ে যাওয়া।
• উপরের ঠোটের পেশী শক্তি কমে যাওয়া।
• মুখ থেকে অনবরত লালা বেড় হওয়া।
• আঙুলে ব্যাক্টেরিয়া ও ফাংগাসজনিত রোগ হওয়া।
• আঙুলের নখ নস্ট হয়ে যাওয়া।

মুখে আঙুল দিয়ে রাখা শিশুরা অবচেতন মনে করে থাকে বিধায় এটি সম্পুর্ন নিবারন করা কষ্টসাধ্য ব্যাপার। শিশুকে যথাযথ পরামর্শ এর মাধ্যমে এটি নিবারন করতে হবে। অন্যথায় দন্ত চিকিৎসার বিভিন্ন ডিভাইস ব্যবহার আঁকাবাঁকা দাঁতের চিকিৎসা করা সম্ভব। আপনার শিশুর সুস্থ দাঁত ও মাড়ির জন্য প্রতি ৬ মাস পর পর শিশু দন্ত বিশেষজ্ঞের পরামর্শ নিন।
